Mauritius is the place of my birth and the country which provided me with my initial education. In many ways it is idyllic, yet there are considerable gaps in healthcare provision. I have made a commitment to specifically address the problems faced by patients requiring rehabilitation for neurological conditions on the island.
Following a comprehensive assessment of current provisions in Mauritius, it was clear that a number of significant improvements needed to be made. These included bringing greater awareness on issues of neurological conditions, the training of specialist doctors, therapists and nurses on issues of pressure ulcers, swallowing, bladder and bowel care and manual handling. In addition, investment in wheelchairs, mobility aids and other resources is needed.
Following field trips, I have been working with the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life and Chinmaya Mission Mauritius to improve rehabilitation care and develop specialist neurological rehabilitation services on the island. I am also involved in exploring ways to develop telemedicine and telehealth facilities in Mauritius to support patients after they have been discharged from hospital.
If you feel able to contribute to this important charity work by committing time, resources or expertise, I would be delighted to hear from you.
